Detail One of Bloodroot Story, 'Bloodroot Seedpods'; 2018; 5 5/8 x 12 1/2 inches; colored pencils, graphite pencils and pastels. A detail from 'Bloodroot Story' illustrating the visual footnote of seedpods exploding with ants dispersing seeds. In nature the seedpods are hidden by leaves and cannot be seen. In the drawing, the Bloodroot leaves are drawn transparent to allow the viewer to "see through" the foliage and view the seedpods. The seedpods are drawn as dark outlined shapes contrasting with the lighter valued leaves. The transparency of the leaves and the uncolored seedpod shapes suggest their fragile transient seasonal forms.
